Briefing and Analysis Team (BAT)	A group of government officials responsible for distilling information provided by the JRT and preparing briefings during crises or disasters.

Civil Contingency Machinery	Formal command structure for managing crises and disasters, comprising government officials, industry representatives and other stakeholders.
COBR	Cabinet Office Briefing Room – may be used by the Civil Contingencies Committee during a crisis or disaster. Officials meeting in this room may also be named COBR.

Disaster	A widespread national event having exceptionally serious consequences for more than one sector of the UK, involving more than one government department and requiring a coordinated government response at a senior level.
Downstream Unit	A group of DTI personnel which represent the downstream oil and gas sector during a crisis or disaster.
Emergency	An isolated event affecting a small sector with only localised geographical consequences, and able to be managed by industry, local authorities or emergency services alone.
Emergency Office Manager (EOM)	Member of the DTI crisis management team responsible for managing the JRT, BAT and OCT.

Pinch Point Strategies	Plans which could be effected at Pinch Points and other locations to counter the effects of disruption to oil and gas production.

Upstream Industry Coordination Group	A team of Industry Representatives assessing the upstream supply situation and providing collective advice to the Upstream Unit.
Upstream Industry Representative	A single point of contact representing a terminal operator.
Upstream Industry Support Team	A group of Industry Representatives who form a part of the Joint Response Team representing the upstream oil and gas sector.
Upstream Oil & Gas Situation Report (sitrep)	A proforma used by upstream industry to provide the Upstream Unit with information about the status of oil and gas production
Upstream Unit	A group of DTI personnel which represent the upstream oil and gas sector during a crisis or disaster.
