Igneous rock
Rocks that were formed by the
solidification of molten magma.
Ignition point
Temperature to which a substance can be
heated before it will burn.
IGU
International Gas
Immiscible
Incapable of being mixed to form a
homogeneous mixture, e.g. oil and water.
Impermeable
Preventing the passage of fluid. A
formation may be porous yet impermeable if there is an absence of connecting
passages between the voids within it. See permeability.
Incineration
areas (at sea)
An offshore area officially designated as
suitable for the burning of chemical waste by specially equipped ships.
Inclination
The angle which a line or surface makes
with the vertical, horizontal or with another line or surface.
Incoterms
A set of international rules for the
interpretation of the chief terms used in foreign trade contracts. It is
published by the International Chamber of Commerce
Inert
Unreactive. Resistant to chemical reactions
with other substances.
Infill drilling
Wells drilled to fill in between
established producing wells; a drilling programme to reduce the spacing between
wells in order to increase production from the field.
Injection
moulding
A plastics-forming process in which molten
plastic is forced into a mould under pressure and allowed to solidify.
Injection well
A well used to inject gas or water into the
reservoir rock in order to maintain reservoir pressure in secondary recovery or
(in the case of gas) for conservation purposes.
Inland barge rig
A drilling structure consisting of a barge
upon which the drilling equipment is constructed. When moved from one location
to another, the barge floats, but, when stationed on the drill site, the barge
is submerged to rest on the bottom. Typically, inland barge rigs are used to
drill wells in marshes, shallow inland bays, and in areas where the water
covering the drill site is not too deep.
Insoluble
A solid chemical substance which will not
dissolve in a given liquid over a specified temperature range.
Inspection
Manager Machine
Inspection Manager machine is a system that
is currently running Inspection Manager Eventing Module.
Instrumentation
A device or assembly of devices designed
for one or more of the following functions: to measure operating variables (as
pressure, temperature, rate of flow, speed of rotation, etc.); to indicate
these phenomena with visible or audible signals; to record them; to control
them within a predetermined range; and to stop operations if the control fails.
Simple instrumentation might consist of an indicating pressure gauge only. In a
completely automatic system, the desired range of pressure, temperature, and so
on is predetermined and preset.
Instruments
Devices for the measurement and control of
variable quantities. These include indicators, recorders, controllers,
transmitters and integrators for measurements such as temperature, pressure, pH
value, flow rate, liquid level, etc.
Integrated
Applies to navigation: integrated radio
positioning and acoustic positioning; or to integrated geophysical and
geotechnical studies; or to any two computer systems that can be made to
interchange information.
Interest
An amount paid for the use of loan capital.
See compound interest, simple interest, loan capital.
Interface
A surface, usually plane, forming the
boundary between adjacent solids, spaces or immiscible liquids. In data
processing it describes all information (signals, data) and the specifications
("protocol") required for ex- changing data between two units of a
system. Interfaces exist between hardware and software units but also between
computer and human user.
Interference
Extraneous signals, noises, etc., that
hinder proper reception of the desired signal in electronic equipment.
Intermediate
casing string
The string of casing set in a well after
the surface casing, but before the production casing, to keep the hole from
caving and to seal off trouble- some formations. The string is sometimes called
protection casing.
Intermediate
chemicals
Chemicals which are derived from basic
petrochemicals and are themselves used to manufacture other chemicals or
products.
Interpolate
To determine intermediate values between
given values in accordance with some known or assumed trend or rate of
variation.
Interstitial
water
Water present in the pores of the oil- or
gas-bearing zone of a reservoir rock.
Inventory
Stock. The quantity of raw materials or
spare parts available for use, or the quantity of product available for sale.
Ion
Positively or negatively charged atom or
group of atoms.

Isobutane
The branched form of butane; used in the
manufacture of isooctane, one of the components of high-quality motor and
aviation fuel.
Isomers
Different molecular structures of a
chemical compound, e.g. n-butane and isobutane, the two isomers of C4H 10.
Isopach map
A geological map which gives the thickness
of a particular stratum.
